STATEMENT: CAP’s Neera Tanden on the Passing of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee
Press Statement

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today on the passing of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee:

Mayor Ed Lee was a nationally recognized leader on progressive policy issues who dedicated more than 20 years of his life to the city of San Francisco. He started his career as a housing activist and civil rights attorney—experiences that influenced his political career—and was especially passionate about addressing homelessness, making substantial investments toward that end.

The Center for American Progress had the privilege to work with Mayor Lee on numerous policy issues, including the creation of Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination—a nationwide network of mayors committed to LGBTQ equality. All of us at CAP send our thoughts and condolences to Mayor Lee’s wife, Anita; his daughters, Brianna and Tania; and all those who worked with and knew him.
