Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of Janus v. AFSCME, a case that would overturn a 40-year-old Supreme Court precedent protecting the rights of workers to organize. In response, Michele Jawando, vice president for Legal Progress at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Once again, the Supreme Court has agreed to take up a case that could fundamentally erode the rights of working people. In one fell swoop, the Court could significantly undermine public sector unions by requiring them to represent workers who refuse to pay union dues.
With this case, the justices will decide whether they will uphold precedent and the U.S. constitution or the interest of big business.
