STATEMENT: CAP Condemns Devos Move to Roll Back Title IX Protections

Washington, D.C. — Winnie Stachelberg, executive vice president for External Affairs at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement after news that Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos took steps to rescind federal guidelines to protect survivors of sexual assault.

Secretary DeVos’ decision today to roll back Title IX protections for sexual assault survivors is yet another shameful action by the Trump administration, which has attacked the well-being and safety of Americans since the very day it took office. From undermining protections for survivors of sexual assault on campus to vowing to rip health care—including maternity benefits, access to Planned Parenthood, and no-copay birth control—from millions of women, attacking immigrant populations by repealing DACA, discriminating against brave transgender service members, and refusing to denounce white supremacy, President Donald Trump and his administration continue to sow terrifying divisions in our country.

Make no mistake, people will fight back with everything they have against Devos’ wildly misguided efforts to undermine progress toward true gender equality.
