STATEMENT: CAP’s Neera Tanden Calls for Bipartisan Effort to Improve Health Care System

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement after efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) failed:

Every version of Senate Republicans’ health care repeal efforts would have left family members, friends, and neighbors without care; sent premiums through the roof; and restricted women’s access to care. The American people have sent a message loud and clear to their senators: Repealing the ACA is completely untenable.

Senate leadership has lost all credibility that it can legislate responsibly. The text of the ‘Health Care Freedom Act’ was released mere hours before a vote in the dead of night. Now is the time for Republican congressional leadership to abandon their failed efforts to repeal the ACA and work across the aisle to increase coverage, lower premiums, and create a better health care system for all Americans.
