STATEMENT: More of the Same: Like the Trump Plan, the House Budget Gives Big Tax Breaks to the Wealthy, Corporations and Would Hurt Working Americans, Says CAP’s Carmel Martin

Washington, D.C — Carmel Martin, executive vice president for policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement after the House Budget Committee, led by Chairman Diane Black (R-TN), released its fiscal year 2018 budget proposal.

The House budget largely mirrors President Donald Trump’s budget and offers nothing to the American people except more of the same failed trickle-down economics. This proposal takes a sledgehammer to health care, job training, infrastructure, education, affordable housing, clean air and water, and diplomacy—all to shovel massive tax cuts to corporations and the top 1 percent. It’s the cherry on top for congressional leadership that is already shamelessly attempting to snatch health care away from tens of millions of Americans, while—unsurprisingly—delivering even more tax breaks to the wealthiest few.

Notably absent from the House GOP budget is any real plan on jobs and wages. This plan is a means to an end, and that end is not economic security for the vast majority of Americans—it’s huge tax cuts for the Republican Party’s biggest donors.
