STATEMENT: CAP’s Vikram Singh Condemns Terrorist Attack in Kabul

Washington, D.C. — Vikram Singh, vice president for national security and international policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today after a truck bomb attack struck Kabul, Afghanistan, killing at least 80 people.

The brutal terrorist attack that struck the heart of Kabul targeted all Afghans and their international partners—but primarily killed and maimed Afghan citizens going about their daily lives in shops and businesses. As the United States and its international partners consider changes to their mission of support for Afghanistan, greater assistance with the intelligence and investigative capabilities to detect and disrupt such attacks will be critical.

The ultimate aim of international military support must be to help Afghanistan achieve a political resolution to the long civil war, secure their country from international terrorist groups, and invest in the future of the Afghan people.

The Center for American Progress condemns this attack and extends our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families.
