Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement on news that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special prosecutor in the investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia:
Naming a special prosecutor is a welcome first step. Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein’s appointment acknowledges the significant erosion of public trust resulting from President Donald Trump’s reported actions to undermine the FBI’s investigation into his campaign’s possible collusion with Russia. More is needed to hold accountable a president who has shown a flagrant disregard for the rule of law. Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein must ensure that Robert Mueller has his full support to pursue this case wherever it leads. Congress must press on with stronger bipartisan inquiries into any potential misconduct through an independent commission.
