STATEMENT: CAP President Neera Tanden Calls for Rep. Tom Price to Withdraw Consideration for HHS Secretary Over Insider Trading Allegations

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement calling for Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) to withdraw his nomination as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services due to allegations of using his political office for personal gain. Rep. Price is accused of having purchased stock in a medical device manufacturer days before he introduced legislation that would have benefited that company:

Rep. Price should withdraw his nomination in light of recent reports that he cannot be trusted to put the American people’s interests ahead of his own financial gain. New revelations show that Rep. Price may have traded stocks based on inside information in an attempt to enrich himself. Rep. Price’s purported actions guarantee that he will operate under a cloud of suspicion from day one and will be unable to earn the trust of the American people. He should spare everyone a long and ugly fight and withdraw.
