STATEMENT: CAP’s Carmel Martin on the White House Establishing the Community Solutions Council

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Executive Vice President for Policy Carmel Martin made the following statement on the White House issuing an executive order to establish the Community Solutions Council:

No child’s life should be determined by the ZIP code in which she is born. By creating the Community Solutions Council today, President Barack Obama fortifies his administration’s commitment to sustained, meaningful local partnerships to address the rising, interconnected place-based challenges facing regions all across the country.

The Community Solutions Council will sustain eight years of success around reforms that preserve the primacy of place, break down silos, and demonstrate how best to leverage and integrate federal investments for transformative impact within communities of concentrated poverty. Through evidence-based strategies such as the White House Promise Zones Initiative, these communities can receive priority access to investments that create jobs; increase economic security and expand opportunity; make quality, affordable housing more available; and improve public safety.

This is what good governance looks like. By partnering with local leaders and business, the Community Solutions Council can make sure resources go to the communities who need them most.
