STATEMENT: CAP President and CEO Neera Tanden on US and China Formally Joining Paris Climate Agreement

Washignton, D.C. — Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden has issued the following statement after the announcement that the United States and China—the world’s two largest emitters of greenhouse gases—have formally joined the historic Paris climate deal. The announcement comes days before the G-20 summit in Hangzhou, China, and is expected to be seen as a tipping point for global participation in the effort to combat climate change.

Today’s news that the United States and China—the world’s two largest greenhouse gas polluters—are both formally joining the Paris climate agreement is a major step toward addressing climate change. CAP has always known that climate change is a global challenge that demands global solutions, and the Paris agreement clearly demonstrates that developed and developing countries are now all committed to working together to meet this threat with an effective, multilateral response.
