Washington, D.C. — Today, House Democrats announced their policies to address democracy issues as part of the “Stronger America” agenda. These reforms are designed to make government work for the American people by increasing accountability and responsiveness, overturning Citizens United, ending secret political spending, protecting and advancing voting rights, lowering barriers to voter participation, and ensuring that all Americans have a chance for their voices to be heard. Liz Kennedy, Director of Democracy and Government Reform at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement in response:
The current rules for our democracy unnecessarily privilege the interests of the already-privileged, and are preventing government from addressing pressing problems like staggering economic inequality, heavy student debt burdens, and catastrophic climate change. Americans want their government to work, and work for them. CAP applauds House Democrats for including their commitment to “Securing Our Democracy” in their “Stronger America” package introduced today. These policies will help end the dominance of wealthy special interests and empower voters to become agents of change so we can work collectively to secure a bright future for our families and our country. This is a step forward for our elected representatives to respond to the American people’s demand to rebalance democracy so that government works for all.
