Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Vice President for Energy Policy Greg Dotson issued the following statement after the leaders of the United States, Mexico, and Canada announced a North American climate plan:
The North American climate partnership announced today by the United States, Mexico, and Canada is an important step in the global effort to curb climate change. As temperature records continue to be broken—and the effects of climate change continue to damage health, agriculture, security, economies, and ecosystems throughout the continent and globe—it is imperative that leaders work collaboratively to address this common threat.
The commitment to reach 50 percent clean energy generation across the continent by 2025 will help accelerate the North American energy transition and reduce carbon pollution over the long term. In addition, the commitment from each of the three countries to reduce methane emissions 40 percent to 45 percent by 2025 is a significant step in the effort to curb near-term warming.
CAP collaborated with think tanks from each of these three countries and made recommendations for strong climate cooperation. Today’s announcement delivers on the opportunity for a robust North American climate strategy. With this climate and energy partnership, the United States, Mexico, and Canada are continuing the momentum of the Paris Agreement and showing that it is possible—when countries work together—to take steps to protect our continent and planet.
