STATEMENT: CAP’s Neera Tanden Reacts to Senate Democrats ‘We the People’ Legislative Package

Washington, D.C. — Today, Senate Democrats introduced a package of bills designed to reform government so it works for people via anti-corruption and accountability policies. Titled “We the People,” this package tackles issues around lobbying, secret political spending, and overturning Citizens United. Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement in response:

“Americans are frustrated that Congress is unaccountable to the interests of the middle class and seems to work for the wealthy and special interests. That is why it is so vital that Senate Democrats show whose side they are on—the public’s—through this package of reforms designated to make Congress more responsive to the people. The package introduced by the Senate Democrats today responds to the public’s demand to make government more accountable by fighting the improper influence of money in politics, bringing transparency to the political spending, and limiting lobbying excess. Reforms such as these are necessary now more than ever if we are to stop big money from continuing to dominate our elections and our public policy; to increase transparency, accountability, and enforcement; and to begin to restore our nation’s democracy so that government works for people.”
