STATEMENT: Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden on the Terror Attacks in Brussels

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement condemning the terrorist attacks in Brussels and expressing support and sympathy for the people of Belgium.

I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the victims of these cowardly terrorist attacks. As Americans, we stand with our friends and allies in condemning the perpetrators and seeking justice for the victims. We must deepen, not weaken, cooperation among our allies and friends in combating terrorist organizations. Now is not the time to consider upending long-standing American foreign policies by retreating from our traditional alliances such as NATO, headquartered in the very city struck today by terrorists. We must also reassure Muslim nations and our Muslim communities that we stand with them and are partners with them in this fight. Anti-Muslim sentiment is exactly what the terrorists want. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has called for unity in the face of these horrific acts. He is correct. Working together, we can and will prevail against terrorism.
