Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Vice President for Energy Policy Greg Dotson issued the following statement after the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, or BOEM, released a new proposed rule that would update decades-old regulations for offshore air pollution from oil and gas drilling:
With this proposal, BOEM deserves credit for taking an important step toward modernizing 36-year-old regulations and protecting the air quality of coastal states from offshore air pollution from oil and gas drilling. CAP will look closely at the proposed rule in the coming days. CAP is pleased that BOEM has set the stage to require black carbon pollution controls on oil and gas development in its final rule. It’s essential that the United States prevents new sources of black carbon from being allowed in the Arctic, a region that is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet.
