STATEMENT: CAP’s Winnie Stachelberg on Sen. Mark Kirk’s Co-Sponsorship of the Equality Act

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Executive Vice President for External Affairs Winnie Stachelberg issued the following statement on Sen. Mark Kirk’s (R-IL) co-sponsorship of the Equality Act:

Sen. Kirk’s co-sponsorship of the Equality Act builds on his long record of support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, people and continues the historic legacy of Illinois Republicans leading the way on equal rights. The shared values of fairness and equality embodied in the Equality Act know no party and reflect the sentiments of an overwhelming majority of Americans who believe that all families should be free from fear of discrimination throughout their lives. No effort for equal rights has ever been successful without bipartisan support; Sen. Kirk’s support brings us one step closer to making the Equality Act the law of the land.
