Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden issued the following statement on the passing of former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger:
The passing of Sandy Berger gives us all an opportunity to reflect on what a life of service means. Sandy worked at the highest levels of government and was a successful business person. But the connecting theme of his life was his commitment to serve his country, as well as those in need throughout the world. Whether it be in government, in business, or in his personal life, a desire to help and to serve ran through everything he did.
He was an unfailingly good friend and supporter to all who knew him. He never left a call unanswered or an email not responded to. Sandy was always willing to help. To many here at CAP, he was a mentor, a sounding board, a constructive critic, and willing participant in the many national security discussions and deliberations in which we regularly engage. His work has helped shape our work, and for that, we are grateful.
The entire CAP family sends our condolences to Sandy’s family and all the friends and colleagues who respected his work and valued his friendship.
