STATEMENT: CAP President Neera Tanden Calls Talk of Closing Mosques and Creating Muslim Registry Disturbing and Un-American

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden issued the following statement in response to remarks made by public figures calling for the closure of mosques and the creation of a registry of Muslim Americans:

Recent remarks from public figures calling for the closure of mosques and the creation of a registry of Muslim Americans are disturbing and blatantly un-American. Acceptance of members of all faiths is a core source of America’s strength and the very thing extremists such as ISIS seek to undermine. It is inconceivable that we as a diverse nation would consider shuttering houses of worship and dangerously singling out our fellow citizens. It goes against our bedrock values and only serves to help these terrorists reach their clearly stated goals.
