STATEMENT: CAP’s David J. Hayes on Sage Grouse Conservation Milestone

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Visiting Senior Fellow David J. Hayes issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of the Interior announced a conservation plan that will protect the habitat of the greater sage grouse across the region:

With today’s announcement, a broad coalition of local, state, and national leaders have come together and produced one of the largest conservation achievements of our generation. The years of thoughtful work to save the iconic sagebrush expanses of the American West will not only help the greater sage grouse and dozens of other wildlife species, but it will also benefit the region’s diverse economy—from outdoor recreation and tourism to energy development and agriculture. Today is a reminder of just how much can be accomplished when a wide range of stakeholders take a practical approach, work together across a landscape, and take action to conserve a habitat before its wildlife reaches the brink of extinction.
