STATEMENT: CAP President Neera Tanden on Passing of Civil Rights Activist Julian Bond

Washington, D.C.— On Sunday, Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden issued the following statement upon learning of the passing of civil rights leader and longtime activist Julian Bond:

Today, the nation lost one of its fiercest advocates for justice and equality. Throughout his life, Julian Bond gave voice to the voiceless, called out injustice where it lived, and worked tirelessly to make this nation a more perfect union. He will be missed, but his work lives on in those he inspired to fight every day to ensure the American dream is accessible to all.

Among many other important roles, Bond was a key figure of the 1960s civil rights movement, served as board chairman for the NAACP, and was a founding member of the Southern Poverty Law Center in the 1970s. He was 75 years old and is survived by his wife, Pamela Horowitz, and five children.
