STATEMENT: CAP President Neera Tanden on Andy Slavitt’s Appointment as Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden issued the following statement on the appointment of Andy Slavitt as the new administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS. Slavitt is currently acting administrator for CMS, which oversees Medicaid, Medicare, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the health insurance marketplace.

Andy Slavitt’s depth of expertise, leadership, and innovation has made him a leader in the health care field for years. Throughout his career, Andy’s keen interest has been helping the health care industry better serve consumers. Seniors, children, and low-income Americans as well as people from all walks of life who rely on CMS—will be greatly served by a leader of such commitment and dedication to the best possible care for them.

As we mark the 50th anniversary of the Medicare and Medicaid programs this summer and move past legal challenges to the Affordable Care Act, Andy Slavitt will help chart the next 50 years of improving the health care and well-being for the American people; there is no one better for that task.
