Washington, D.C. — Today, the National Ocean Council released a report on the accomplishments of the National Ocean Policy, a plan created by President Barack Obama via executive order in 2010 to improve the coordination of federal agencies with partial jurisdiction over marine resource management. Michael Conathan, Director of Ocean Policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:
If you ran a company with dozens of departments working on different parts of the same job, you’d want them all to communicate effectively. Today’s report shows that the National Ocean Policy has done this for government agencies, allowing them to coordinate and operate more efficiently. The results are greater certainty for industries operating off our shores; safer, more sustainable seafood for American consumers; and greater incorporation of state priorities in federal policy.
