Washington D.C. — Greg Dotson, CAP Vice President for Energy Policy, released the following statement regarding the White House announcement of a new methane-pollution-reduction goal:
In 2009, the Obama administration began regulating carbon pollution for the first time. Today, President Obama proposed another first: directly regulating and cutting methane pollution from the largest industrial source—the oil and gas sector. These landmark decisions mark the historic effort to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. The president has set an admirable goal of cutting methane pollution 45 percent by 2025. This strategy is a win for the climate, a win for local air quality, a win for public health, and a win for the economy. But to meet this goal, we will need to do even more to ensure that existing sources of methane pollution—not just new sources— deploy cost-effective, off-the-shelf technology to reduce methane pollution and eliminate wasteful leaks.
