STATEMENT: CAP President Neera Tanden on White House Decision to Delay Executive Action on Immigration

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden released the following statement regarding the White House’s announcement that President Barack Obama will delay executive action on immigration:

The president’s decision to delay executive action on immigration is a disappointment with real consequences most acutely felt in the communities experiencing harsh enforcement policies. The president’s delay pales in comparison to the House Republicans’ constant obstruction on immigration reform. The sad fact is that President Obama has contemplated executive action only because the U.S. House of Representatives has refused to even consider the immigration legislation passed by the Senate last year. Moreover, and even more offensive, some candidates running for office are airing ads attacking undocumented immigrants, scapegoating them, and further polarizing the debate on this critical issue. We must focus attention on these actions and hold these leaders accountable.

Given the partisan gridlock, executive action is essential to help our economy and improve the lives of millions of families, and we are looking forward to it happening this year.
