Washington, D.C. — Former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro and businessman and philanthropist Andrew Hauptman have joined the Board of the Center for American Progress, the organization announced today.
“American Progress is delighted to welcome two visionary leaders, Julián Castro and Andrew Hauptman, to the Center for American Progress’ board of directors. Through their work in politics and policymaking, business, and philanthropy, both Julián and Andrew have left indelible marks in their fields,” said Neera Tanden, president and CEO of CAP. “2020 and the next few years represent a crucial period for both CAP and the broader progressive movement, and I am thrilled that Julián and Andrew will play critical roles in shaping our work.”

Julián Castro served as U.S. secretary of housing and urban development under President Barack Obama from 2014 to 2017. Before that, he was mayor of his native San Antonio, Texas — the youngest mayor of a top 50 American city at the time. In 2012, he gave a rousing keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention, during which he described the American dream as a relay to be passed from generation to generation. After his historic campaign for president in 2020, Secretary Castro created People First Future, an organization created to elect bold, progressive candidates whose campaigns are focused on improving the lives of all people they hope to represent. In September, Secretary Castro launched Our America, a Lemonada Media podcast examining how the American experience can differ so dramatically from one person to the next.
Andrew Hauptman is the chairman of Andell Inc., a private investment firm and family office he controls along with his wife, Ellen Bronfman Hauptman. Andrew co-founded and serves as director of the Bronfman Hauptman Foundation, which is dedicated to social justice, advancements in education, and environmental protection and supports many other philanthropic and civic causes. He was elected charter trustee of City Year in 2020 after having served as trustee for more than 12 years and is the co-founder, former chair of the board for nine years, and now chair emeritus of City Year Los Angeles. Andrew is a member of the Yale University Council, the Advisory Board of the Los Angeles Coalition for the Economy and Jobs, and the Leadership Council of International Medical Corps. He holds a B.A. from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
