Washington, D.C. — Today, the Center for American Progress released a new column looking at what initial steps colleges and universities should take to curb police brutality on campus. The piece comes amid ongoing policy debates among federal, state, and local lawmakers on how to rein in police misconduct and protect Black lives. The measures outlined in the piece focus on increasing police accountability, including by:
- Leveraging contract negotiations to limit the use of force, requiring police departments to publicly disclose data on police officer complaints, and banning officers with a history of excessive use of force
- Severing contracts or limiting mutual aid agreements with police departments who do not agree to new contract terms
- Requiring campus safety departments to abide by similar anti-aggression and transparency policies
- Demilitarizing campus police departments
