Washington, D.C. — Today, the Center for American Progress released a new 50-state analysis estimating the number of Americans who could lose health care coverage if the U.S. Supreme Court sides with the Trump administration and strikes down the Affordable Care Act (ACA) during the pandemic. The estimates come a day before the Trump administration will file its opening briefs with the Supreme Court in California v. Texas, its health care repeal lawsuit.
Building upon previous analyses as well as new projections on changes in health insurance enrollment, the analysis finds that more than 23 million Americans could lose health coverage—a 17 percent increase from previous estimates. The surge of nearly 3.4 million additional Americans at risk of losing their insurance stems from the job losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
“The ACA is playing a vital role in helping Americans weather the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic. This analysis shows that the Trump administration’s lawsuit threatens to pull the rug out from millions more Americans just when their health and financial security are at even greater risk,” said Emily Gee, health economist at CAP.
