Washington, D.C. — Today, the Center for American Progress released a new issue brief exploring how the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) would bolster support for new and existing protections against sex discrimination and the path forward for the amendment’s ratification. The brief comes the same week as Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the ERA and a day before multiple state attorneys general announce new litigation relating to the amendment.
The brief outlines how the ERA could strengthen gender-based violence survivors’ ability to reach justice under the Violence Against Women Act and Title IX; provide greater protection for people who have been subject to pay or pregnancy discrimination; and help fend off attacks on reproductive autonomy and health care.
“It is crucial to formally acknowledge in our nation’s founding document equal rights regardless of sex,” said Robin Bleiweis, research associate for women’s economic security at CAP and author of the brief. “Women and people across the gender spectrum have waited almost 100 years for this, and in a moment of unprecedented attacks on our rights and autonomy, the ERA is as ripe as ever for ratification.”
