Washington, D.C. — Today, the Center for American Progress released a new analysis estimating losses in the number of individuals with health coverage in all 435 congressional districts across the country if the Trump administration and 20 Republican-led states’ lawsuit to strike down the Affordable Care Act (ACA) succeeds in federal court. These new estimates come on the same day that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit hears arguments on whether to overturn a recent partisan decision that struck down the health care law in its entirety. The analysis finds:
- On average, 45,600 individuals would lose coverage in each congressional district if the ACA is struck down.
- While coverage losses would be greatest in states that have elected to expand Medicaid, many districts in nonexpansion states would suffer substantial coverage losses as well.
- About 15.4 million lower-income people would lose coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and about 6.9 million people currently enrolled in the so-called individual market would lose private insurance coverage.
