Washington, D.C. — Last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a once-in-a-generation legislative package focused on curbing the culture of corruption and protecting voting rights in the United States. This legislation—the For the People Act, or H.R.1—passed with unanimous support from House Democrats, many of whom were elected in November 2018 on the promise of delivering reform. This sweeping legislation has also been introduced in the U.S. Senate, where it has garnered the support of every Democratic senator. The Center for American Progress has been a vocal proponent of the For the People Act and its clear, strong reforms.
Now, in a new publication, CAP is examining what the next steps might be to further address the United States’ broken system and help ensure clean elections. In “Bold Democracy Reforms That Build on H.R. 1,” Michael Sozan, Sam Berger, William Roberts, Danielle Root, and Alex Tausanovitch propose more than 20 democracy reform solutions that CAP believes should become part of the nation’s ongoing discussion about how to restore trust in government and ensure fair representation of all Americans.
“Americans are demanding bold solutions to fix our broken political system. Without far-reaching reforms, our government will continue to be rigged in favor of wealthy, special interests and their policy wishes,” said Michael Sozan, senior fellow for CAP’s Democracy and Government Reform team and co-author of the report.“Today’s publication is a roadmap for lawmakers who want to build on the historic For the People Act with structural reforms such as banning lobbyist fundraising, cracking down further on foreign money infesting our elections, and giving Washington, D.C., residents the right to vote, among many other proposals.”
