Washington, D.C. — As the U.S. House of Representatives prepares to vote on a resolution condemning the actions of the Myanmar government and calling for the release of two wrongly imprisoned reporters, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
It is encouraging that Congress plans to hold the government of Myanmar accountable for its campaign of genocide against the Rohingya people and the unjust imprisonment of two journalists, including Wa Lone, a colleague who worked with CAP in 2016. These journalists were jailed for uncovering the government’s atrocities, and we honor their bravery as we observe Human Rights Day. It will take the courage of reporters and citizens alike to shed light on these atrocities, force Myanmar to treat the Rohingya people with dignity, and get back on the path to democracy.
