Washington, D.C. — As the U.S. Supreme Court hears the first arguments of the term next week, a new column from the Center for American Progress says that conservatives are looking for big wins in a handful of blockbuster cases that could validate discrimination and curb political representation for millions of Americans.
The column warns that the high court could, among other things, entrench the practice of gerrymandering and give businesses across the country the right to discriminate against customers based on the owners’ religious views.
At the same time, conservatives in Congress are running roughshod over the Senate’s longstanding tradition to ram through judicial nominees to federal trial and appeals courts. And they are threatening to split up the federal appeals court that oversees western states.
