Washington, D.C. — Today, TalkPoverty.org—a project of the Center for American Progress dedicated to providing in-depth analysis, commentary, and educational resources about poverty in America—unveiled a redesigned website, which includes new interactive features mapping poverty data at the state and congressional district levels. The new features allow users to view various poverty indicators—including income inequality, unemployment, hunger and food insecurity, and affordable housing, among others—within states. The newly designed site also enables users to search by ZIP code in order to view congressional district-level poverty data.
A comprehensive list of the 15 poverty indicators included in TalkPoverty.org’s new features is available in Center for American Progress’ annual “State of the States Report,” which was released in February. The report also contains fact sheets that rank the best and worst indicators for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
“Good anti-poverty policy should be informed by authentic stories about people experiencing economic insecurity and also by sound data and research,” said Greg Kaufmann, Editor of TalkPoverty.org and Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. “At TalkPoverty.org, visitors can now easily access both.”
In pursuit of TalkPoverty.org’s mission to elevate the vibrant voices of the anti-poverty community—including those living in poverty and working to reduce poverty every day—TalkPoverty.org will continue to publish pieces from diverse contributors as part of the site’s redesign. In the coming weeks, TalkPoverty.org will also publish pieces from high-profile contributors, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), historian Annelise Orleck, journalists Barbara Ehrenreich and Stephanie Land, and Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden.
Past contributors to TalkPoverty.org include Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA), Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), celebrity chef Tom Colicchio, and editor and publisher of The Nation Katrina vanden Heuvel, as well as more than 20 people struggling with poverty.
The new website is also home to the weekly podcast TalkPoverty Radio. Launched in January 2015, TalkPoverty Radio is dedicated to elevating the conversation around poverty in America, dispelling stereotypes and myths, and educating listeners through authentic stories and diverse perspectives.
