Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress announced today that Michael Golden will join the organization as a Senior Fellow, where he will advance ideas to improve how government works and restore public trust in the legislative branch of the federal government.
“Michael’s recent book Unlock Congress: Reform the Rules, Restore the System offers a powerful argument why Congressional rules and procedures need to change. He explains the problem and offers solutions that are clear, precise, and nonpartisan. We at CAP welcome Michael’s expertise, as well as his passion for making our government work better for everyone,” said Carmel Martin, Executive Vice President for Policy at the Center for American Progress. “At a time when public opinion of Congress is at an all-time low, Michael’s work is needed more than ever.”
Golden is a former broadcast journalist whose investigative and public affairs reporting on politics, education, health care, and criminal justice earned him honors from the Associated Press, the Edward R. Murrow Awards, and the Society of Professional Journalists. Between 2000 and 2006, Golden worked as a campaign manager and communications strategist on political races for the White House, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives. In 2006, he co-founded One Million Degrees, a nonprofit scholarship program for low-income community college students in Illinois that has raised more than $10 million to empower hundreds of scholars to graduate and launch careers. In 2012, Golden co-founded Complete The Degree, an affiliated program designed to motivate adults to return to college to finish their education.
Golden serves on the boards of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law, the Anti-Defamation League, and One Million Degrees. He was appointed by the state of Illinois to voluntarily serve on the state’s Commission on the Elimination of Poverty. Golden earned his B.A. at Indiana University, and his M.S. in DePaul University’s School of Public Service.
