Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress announced today that Tom Jawetz has joined the organization as the new Vice President of Immigration Policy.
“I am delighted to welcome Tom Jawetz to CAP,” said Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress. “Tom’s nuanced understanding of immigration policy and the debate in Congress will be a valuable addition to our team as we work to fix the broken immigration system.”
Jawetz joins CAP after serving as the Immigration Subcommittee chief counsel in the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary, where he oversaw all aspects of immigration-related hearings and markups before the committee and legislation on the House floor. He also advised leadership, members of Congress, and their staff on all areas of immigration law and policy.
Previously, Jawetz was a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union, representing immigration detainees in class action and individual challenges to unlawful conditions of confinement. He also testified twice before the House Judiciary Committee, once on the issue of immigration detainee medical care and deaths in custody and once on the Private Prison Information Act of 2007. Jawetz is the co-author of a report detailing the experiences of thousands of prisoners who were trapped in a New Orleans jail during Hurricane Katrina.
In 2005, Jawetz received an Arthur Liman Public Interest Fellowship to work at the Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. Prior to that, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Kimba M. Wood in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Jawetz is an accomplished author and speaker who received his A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1999 and his J.D. from Yale Law School in 2003.
