Washington, D.C. — Today, TalkPoverty.org—a project of the Center for American Progress—announced that it will relaunch its radio program, TalkPoverty Radio, as a weekly show on We Act Radio. Starting April 30, TalkPoverty Radio will air at 4:00 p.m. ET every Thursday on We Act Radio, a progressive radio network that is home to popular shows such as The Bill Press Show and The Thom Hartmann Show. In its new home, TalkPoverty Radio will continue to draw on the expertise and experiences of national and local organizations while lifting up the voices of people living in poverty.
TalkPoverty Radio’s premiere episode on We Act Radio will feature Ben Jealous, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and former president and CEO of the NAACP; Alex Lawson, executive director of Social Security Works and co-owner of the We Act Radio network; Linda Tirado, author of Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America; Alan Pyke, ThinkProgress Deputy Economic Policy Editor at the Center for American Progress Action Fund; and Marc Mauer, executive director at The Sentencing Project.
“With more than one out of two people in America experiencing at least one year of poverty or near poverty during their working years, the time for a show with national reach devoted exclusively to this issue is long overdue,” said Greg Kaufmann, co-executive producer of TalkPoverty Radio and editor of TalkPoverty.org. “We are thrilled to work with We Act Radio, which has an activist-oriented audience that not only wants to learn about poverty, but also wants to take action to dramatically reduce it. We look forward to a nuanced and engaging conversation led by our brilliant co-hosts.”
Co-hosted by CAP’s Rebecca Vallas and Tracey Ross, TalkPoverty Radio was initially launched on SiriusXM Insight as a six-week miniseries dedicated to elevating the conversation around poverty in America, dispelling stereotypes and myths, and educating listeners through authentic stories and diverse perspectives. The miniseries featured prominent guests, including media personalities such as Melissa Harris-Perry; lawmakers such as Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Reps. Gwen Moore (D-WI) and Barbara Lee (D-CA); advocates and nonprofit leaders such as Cecile Richards and Sarita Gupta; and low-income people such as Linda Tirado and Tianna Gaines-Turner.
In its new home, TalkPoverty Radio will continue to draw on the expertise and experiences of national and local organizations while lifting up the voices of people living in poverty.
We Act Radio is also the home of the Edge of Sports with Dave Zirin and The Majority Report with Sam Seder, as well as shows produced by MomsRising and Daily Kos.
