Washington, D.C. — Today the Center for American Progress announced that Marc Jarsulic—former chief economist of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs—has been named the Center’s Vice President for Economic Policy. Within his new role, Jarsulic will lead CAP’s Economic Policy team in issues ranging from middle-class growth, economic competitiveness, tax policy, housing finance, and globalization.

His leadership, expertise, and insights will help develop new policy proposals as he leads CAP’s economic team in its work to ensure economic growth that is more widely shared and responsible fiscal policies, as well as other economic issues.”
Jarsulic joins CAP after working as chief economist for Better Markets, where he researched financial regulatory policy issues and advocated for financial market transparency, accountability, and oversight. Prior to his work at Better Markets, Jarsulic served as deputy staff director and chief economist of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee before working as chief economist of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking Housing and Urban Affairs, where he drafted legislation on financial regulation and served as a policy advisor to the committee chairman.
In addition to his experience on the Hill, Jarsulic is also a veteran of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Trade Commission. While with the SEC, Jarsulic investigated cases involving violations of federal securities laws—including market manipulation, accounting fraud, and adviser reporting—and served as a senior risk advisor for the Office of Risk Assessment. A member of the New York and D.C. bar, Jarsulic also served as an attorney at Clifford Chance LLP, where he developed legal strategy and economic analyses on antitrust matters.
Jarsulic, who is a former professor of economics at the University of Notre Dame, has contributed to several legal, professional, and peer-reviewed academic economic journals. His most recent book is Anatomy of a Financial Crisis. Jarsulic earned a B.A. in philosophy from Michigan State University, a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.
