Washington D.C. — Campus Progress – the youth outreach arm of the nation’s leading progressive think tank, the Center for American Progress – is proud to announce its new director, Anne Johnson. Johnson will succeed former director, David Halperin, who worked with John Podesta in 2005 to found Campus Progress.
“Anne is a strong and successful leader in youth engagement and activism and progressive causes. We are excited to bring her experience and dedication to new progressive causes in her role as director of Campus Progress,” said Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress.
“This is a critical time for young Americans,” Johnson said. “Our challenges are real, but so is our commitment to creating a more just society. Young people have lead the way on so many important issues of our time – access to education, immigration reform, marriage equality, climate change, voting rights, economic justice and so many others. I’m thrilled to be a part of this team and build on the great work Campus Progress has done engaging young advocates and progressive leaders.”
Johnson most recently served as Senior Campaign Specialist for the National Education Association (NEA) where she led efforts to increase young member engagement within the union. She has extensive organizing and campaign experience ranging from local races to national issue and electoral campaigns including We Are Wisconsin. She previously served as the COPE National Field Director for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Engaging and mobilizing young people has been a focus throughout her career, stemming from her founding of Campus Camp Wellstone, a youth political training program, following her work on Senator Paul Wellstone’s 2002 re-election campaign.
