Washington, D.C. — After polls close on November 3, it may take days or weeks to count the votes, declare a winner, and certify the results for the U.S. 2020 general election. In this period of uncertainty, social media platforms may be used to delegitimize the election process and organize violence. While much of the disinformation conversation has focused on the preelection period, this panel will game out online threats and what actions social media platforms should take in the period between election night and inauguration.
On Friday, October 23, the Center for American Progress will host a discussion about the steps that social media platforms should be taking to prepare for potential attempts to stoke conflict or delegitimize the election. Panelists will discuss the unique threats after polls close and the preparation, product, and policy steps that social media platforms can take to prevent their products from causing real world harm and delegitimizing elections.
