PRESS CALL ADVISORY: Sen. Chris Murphy To Join Neera Tanden and Disability Rights Advocates To Discuss Devastating and Chaotic Impact of ACA Repeal on People With Disabilities

Washington, D.C. — On October 12, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee will begin hearings to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Just a few weeks later, the court is expected to hear arguments in California v. Texas, a White House-backed lawsuit that seeks to invalidate the entirety of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its protections for Americans.

On Friday, October 9 at 11:30 a.m. ET, Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden and CAP Disability Justice Initiative Director Rebecca Cokley will join Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) for a press call to outline how devastating and chaotic ACA repeal would be for people with disabilities. Murphy, Tanden, and Cokley will also be joined by Kathy Flaherty, a disability community advocate and coronavirus “long-hauler” from Connecticut. Like Flaherty, more than 7 million Americans now have a new preexisting condition: They were at one point infected with the coronavirus.

Alongside the press call, CAP will release a column that outlines the many benefits of the ACA to the disability community and highlights the devastating impact that ACA repeal would have on people with disabilities. The ACA protects people with disabilities in a multitude of ways: It ensures that people with preexisting conditions can obtain insurance and bans annual and lifetime limits on care, among other provisions.

Live transcription will be available for this call.
