Washington, D.C. — For more than half a year, families across America have had their lives upended by the Trump administration’s bungled handling of the coronavirus pandemic and resulting economic crisis, and it’s been mothers on the front lines who are helping their families navigate this period of tumult. Last Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an updated version of the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act, the second major relief package the House has passed since the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was signed into law. Since that time, the U.S. Senate has not passed any meaningful relief legislation to deal with the public health and economic crises.
Moms are paying the price for the Senate’s inaction. Lack of child care and in-person schooling options have pushed Millennial moms out of the workforce at nearly triple the rate as Millennial dads. Even in the middle of a pandemic, many women—especially women of color and low-income women, who make up a disproportionate segment of the essential workforce—continue to be forced to make impossible choices between their employment and their health. And millions more mothers are consumed with worry that their children are falling behind academically and socially and may suffer lasting social and developmental trauma because of this crisis. That’s why mothers across America are speaking out and demanding that the Senate finally do its job and pass meaningful relief for those struggling to find work, put food on the table, and keep a roof over their families’ heads.
