EVENT ADVISORY: The Power of Women: Intersections in the Global Climate and Reproductive Rights Movements

Washington, D.C. — Climate change poses an unprecedented threat to the global community, and women are more likely to bear the brunt of the consequences due to inequities in power at the intersections of gender, race, and income, among other factors.

Women around the world—particularly women of color, low-income women, and women in the “global south”—are already facing many challenges that are exacerbated by the effects of climate change, from poor reproductive and maternal health outcomes to worsened economic security to surges in gender-based violence. At the same time, women are strategically positioned to combat climate change and secure sexual and reproductive health and rights. They are leading the charge in their families, in their communities, and in politics to promote equity and bodily autonomy and t0 mitigate the worst consequences of a changing planet.

For International Women’s Day 2020, we invite you to join the Center for American Progress and Planned Parenthood Global for an armchair discussion with youth climate activist Vanessa Nakate, followed by a panel discussion featuring domestic and international leaders in climate justice and reproductive rights. The panelists will explore the intersections of climate change and reproductive health and autonomy and will discuss the domestic and international initiatives on which women are leading the way.
