ADVISORY: 3rd Annual Smart on Crime Innovations Conference Will Highlight the Latest Ideas in Criminal Justice Reform

New York — This year’s Smart on Crime Innovations conference will be held at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York on September 24 and 25. Since 2017, the Smart on Crime Innovations Conference has showcased the progress being made across the country toward a smarter, fairer, and more effective criminal justice system.

This year’s conference will discuss the latest innovations in prison reform, gun violence prevention, prosecutor-public defender collaboration, and other under-the-radar criminal justice reforms from around the country. Confirmed speakers include: Mark Holden, senior vice president at Koch Industries; Chokwe Antar Lumumba (D), mayor of Jackson, Mississippi; Desmond Meade, executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition; Rachael Rollins, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, district attorney; and Bruce Western, professor of sociology and social justice and co-director of the Justice Lab at Columbia University. More speakers will be confirmed closer to the date of the conference.

The conference will feature a preview of the forthcoming documentary series “College Behind Bars,” which examines the transformative power of higher education through the experiences of incarcerated men and women seeking college degrees. The documentary, which is directed by Lynn Novick and executive produced by Ken Burns, will air on PBS on November 25 and 26.
