Washington, D.C. — Despite being the wealthiest country in the world, the United States lags behind other developed countries in combating maternal and infant mortality. America’s epidemic is due in large part to crisis-level mortality rates among black women and children. On Wednesday, December 12, 2018, the Center for American Progress will host U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) and women of color experts in the maternal and infant health fields to discuss the key factors driving racial disparities in maternal and infant mortality. The panelists will also discuss policy changes lawmakers should consider when weighing how to address these disparities.
