Washington, D.C. — Manipulated election districts and voter purges prevent fair representation and progress on policies that enjoy majority support and that matter to people’s lives. This fall, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in two blockbuster cases that could reshape voting rights and representation for all Americans. In Wisconsin, citizens are challenging extreme partisan gerrymandering that weakens the ability of voters to influence lawmaking. In Ohio, the A. Philip Randolph Institute is challenging the state’s illegal practice of purging voters simply for not having recently voted, in violation of the National Voter Registration Act.
On Tuesday, September 19, the Center for American Progress will host a conversation with experts on these cases and their implications for public policy and the future of our democracy and release a report that shows how distorted districts contribute to state laws that fail to reflect the voters’ priorities in Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Virginia.
