Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress, the Niskanen Center, and the National Immigration Law Center– Immigrant Justice Fund invite you to join a special press briefing on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. EST to discuss the possible unprecedented and unfounded executive order that would effectively institute an “income test” for immigrants.
As President Donald Trump attempts to rewrite his unconstitutional Muslim ban, there has been talk of a new executive order, which, if signed, would serve as a new pretext for blocking legal immigration and even deporting some individuals who are in the United States legally. The order, premised on the dangerous and misleading claim that immigrants are more likely than U.S.-born individuals to use federal means-tested benefits, would expand the focus of the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant campaign beyond unauthorized immigrants, refugees, and Muslims to include green card holders—or lawful permanent residents—living in the United States. It would potentially bar millions of immigrants from legally entering the United States to reunite with their families, under the pretext that they are not rich enough. Much like the Muslim ban, this order purports to address a problem that does not exist, and it is not designed to keep America safe and prosperous but to target families that look different.
Experts will discuss findings from new Center for American Progress and Niskanen Center analyses showing that, contrary to President Trump’s misleading claim, working-class immigrant families are already significantly less likely than U.S.-born individuals to access public benefits. They will also discuss what this executive order could do—and who it would affect.
