ADVISORY: VA Secretary of Education, Curry School Dean to Join TeachStrong Campaign to Highlight Virginia’s Leadership in Preparing Teachers for the Classroom

Charlottesville, Virginia — Enrollment in teacher preparation programs across the country continues to drop, and many teachers report feeling underprepared for the daily realities of running a classroom. On Tuesday, October 11, Virginia Secretary of Education Dietra Trent and Curry School of Education Dean Robert Pianta will join a TeachStrong event that will highlight how Virginia is coming up with innovative ways to better prepare teachers for the classroom. A panel of Curry School experts and Virginia school leaders and educators will discuss the need to reimagine teacher preparation nationally in order to modernize and elevate the teaching profession.

The TeachStrong campaign is a coalition of more than 60 leading education groups aimed at making modernizing and elevating the teaching profession the top education policy priority in 2016 so that students, especially those from low-income families, can be taught by great teachers. The campaign’s nine policy principles detail the need for comprehensive, systemic change to the teaching profession. To accomplish this goal, TeachStrong believes that the United States must invest in and develop policies that better recruit, prepare, support, and compensate teachers through all stages of their careers.

The event is open to the press. Members of the media may RSVP to [email protected].
