Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress will host a discussion on September 14 looking at the past 10 years of fisheries management in the United States and its influence on global regulation and exploring solutions to address these evolving challenges. The event will feature Global Managing Director for Oceans at The Nature Conservancy Maria Damanaki; former Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and current Distinguished Professor at Oregon State University Jane Lubchenco; and Vice President of Conservation & Science and Chief Conservation Officer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Margaret Spring.
The event will focus on changes made a decade ago to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, which established the United States as the global leader in effective, sustainable fisheries management, codifying progressive reforms that have helped restore depleted fish stocks and ocean ecosystem health while growing an American seafood industry that supports 1.4 million jobs. It will also look at looming challenges, from global warming to global seafood markets, and the outlook for international fisheries.
