PRESS CALL ADVISORY: Sens. Wyden, Udall and Rep. Cartwright to Discuss DOI Listening Sessions on Coal Royalty Rates and Announce Proposal to Reform the Federal Coal Program

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Tom Udall (D-NM) and U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA) will join a press call hosted by the Center for American Progress on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at 11:30 a.m. ET to discuss the Department of the Interior’s, or DOI’s, upcoming public listening sessions on reforming the federal coal program to ensure that taxpayers receive a fair share for coal mined on America’s public lands. The members of Congress will announce a new legislative proposal to modernize the federal coal program and ensure that taxpayers receive a fair share for coal mined on public lands.

Outdated federal coal policies fail to ensure that mining companies pay royalties on the true market value of the coal extracted on America’s public lands. Recent investigations have shown that coal companies are taking advantage of loopholes in the federal coal program to intentionally avoid paying royalties, costing taxpayers billions of dollars in lost revenues.

Matt Lee-Ashley, Senior Fellow and Director of the Public Lands Project at CAP, will join the conversation.

The first of the DOI’s listening sessions will take place in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, July 29, at 1:00 p.m.
