Washington, D.C. — In dual recognition of Pride Month and World Refugee Day, the Center for American Progress will host a discussion on Thursday, June 18, 2015, at 10:00 am about new data compiled by CAP on lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, or LGBT, asylum seekers and the challenges they still face as they flee persecution in their home countries. Former U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) will deliver a keynote address to be followed by a panel of immigration and LGBT experts.
As the U.S. government does not collect data on sexual orientation or gender identity in its protection systems, we do not know how well existing efforts to support LGBT asylum seekers have worked or what more must be done to ensure that they can access the protection they need. Therefore, there are gaps in knowledge about how LGBT people are treated in the asylum system, making it difficult to address the challenges they face. This event will use independently compiled data to look at the issue and see what can be done to protect LGBT people seeking asylum from persecution.
